Issues We Help With:

Grade Appeals

*Students can appeal grades if the issue meets the following criteria:

a) The course objectives have not been adhered to or was not provided and/or;
b) The evaluation criteria have not been applied according to the Grading and Evaluation of Student
Performance Policy E-1.22 and/or;
c) The evaluation criteria have not been applied in a reasonable, fair and just manner and/or;
d) A procedural error related to grade calculation was made (e.g. instructor lost assignments, calculation
error)

Medical Withdrawals

Have a medical concern that is stopping you from succeeding in college?

We can help with Medical Withdrawals so you can take the time necessary to get better for your college comeback!

Complaint Resolution

If your wanting to raise an issue or concern with the college - we can assist with this process.

The complaints resolution process forms and information can be gathered from the CNCSU, before you submit your forms to the CNC Student Services Department.

Accessibility Requirements

At the CNCSU, we want to make sure that you have the opportunity to succeed.

For students who have accessibility issues, we encourage you to work with Accessibility Services to get started and have accommodations set.

If there is an issue with your accommodations being followed, reach out to us so we can help!

Bullying and Harassment

In a public setting, it is unlikely that you will get along with everyone.

However, if you are experiencing a situation effecting your personal or mental wellbeing from someone elses actions, we can guide you.

We can assist by being a support person throughout the process of talking to Student Services and the Safety and Security departments. You don't have to be alone.

How To Talk To Your Instructor

We are all human, so it is natural to have concerns about how to talk to your instructor.

Come and chat with us, let us know your concern so we can guide you on how to find a peaceful resolution.

Relevant Policies

If you are invited to a meeting with College administration or faculty—whether it’s related to academic performance, conduct, or concerns you’ve raised—we strongly encourage you not to attend alone.

These meetings can carry serious consequences or involve complex policies. Before attending, please connect with the CNC Students’ Union. We can help you understand your rights, provide guidance, and even accompany you for support.

You are not alone—and you don’t have to navigate this process by yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

I cheated, can I still come to you?

We actually encourage you to come and see us so we can explain to you what options you have. Our job is not to judge, but rather support you and ensure you are treated fairly. Advocacy is strictly confidential and will not be shared with the College without your consent.

Please know, we will NOT lie on your behalf if you have cheated or broken college rules.

Can I come to you for legal advice?

No. The CNCSU does not have the ability to provide legal advice to students. If you are seeking support such as this, we do have legal support services that are provided through the Greenshield Health and Dental Plan. To access this service, you can call for free legal aid through the Assistance Services Group.

You can call them by phone at 877-333-3884

Will making a complaint or doing an appeal effect my immigration or academics?

Making a complaint, appealing a grade and other forms of advocacy (within reason) should not have an effect on immigration or future academics.

Violating institution rules and government law may have consequences that could have an impact on your immigration status or future academics - but going through appeal process and challenging CNC decisions will not.

I was put on a success plan, what can I do?

If you are in a position where you are being given a success plan - make sure you do not sign any documents without a full understanding of that success plan. We would be glad to go over the proposed success plan with you, and attend meetings with faculty to ensure you are being treated fairly.

What can the legal aid services help with?

The Assistance Services Group, available for members who are on the Greenshield Health and Dental plan, can answer questions regarding:
- Family

- Criminal
- Landlord and Tenant
- Immigration

- Employment

- Civil Litigation

- and more!

Will this be on my transcript?

Only the final grade assigned for your course will show on your transcript. Depending on the outcome of your appeal, that grade could be subject to change.
