I used a black peel and stick wallpaper behind the bed and kept everything else pretty restrained. Cream bedding, warm bedside lights and natural wood were enough to soften the wall, so it didn't feel gloomy at all. What surprised me was how much the pattern changed under different lighting. During the day it looked fairly subtle, but at night the texture became much more noticeable and gave the room a really cozy character.
